2. Mrs. Wilson Breast Lump

She is a 65 year old widow who presents to the clinic with a palpable breast lump. She seems very unconcerned about the lump but says to you, “I am sure it is nothing.” On the other hand, the clinic physician is quite concerned and wants to have Mrs. Wilson go for a biopsy immediately. Upon suggestion of a biopsy Mrs. Wilson becomes tearful and stands up to leave the office saying, “I don’t need a biopsy. I know it is not cancer. My mother died of cancer and I know all about breast cancer.”

You follow Mrs. Wilson into the waiting room trying to prevent her from leaving.

Most of us have all been in situations where we’re not sure ‘what’ to say next. We may know what shouldn’t be said… but that’s not the same as saying what ‘needs’ to be said.

What are you going to say to her now?
