This is an article appraisal assignment in which you are given an article to read and respond

appropriately to questions. Included are the instructions/grading criteria and examples. It is not

a true essay but just an appraisal. There’s no real format either than what is given in the

example.

a. List each question on the checklist and your response, together with a

rationale/justification of your response
b. Should NOT be a direct copy of information from the original paper
c. Should NOT be more than 1500 words in total

2. Does the student demonstrate understanding of the study design used? (demonstrated through

ability to discuss the relevance of design issues such as randomization etc, where relevant) (4

points)
3. Does the student demonstrate the ability to analyze the quality of the study that is being

appraised? (demonstrated through discussion of problems with study quality) (5 points)
4. Does the student understand the study results? (demonstrated by the ability to summarize

key results in their own words and show that they understand what this means) (5 points)
5. Is the student able to reflect on the applicability of the study for their context and/or

practice (demonstrated through reflection on how similar the population in the study is to their

practice, their assessment of the robustness of the study) (3 points)
6. Overall presentation (within word count, clearly written etc) (2 points)
